Kathie Zucker, 57, lived in New Jersey her whole life, but is now moving to South Carolina. After visiting her daughter — who attends college in Charleston, South Carolina, she found that she liked the area. AdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Kathie Zucker, 57, and her decision to move to Charleston, South Carolina, from the New York City suburb of Butler, New Jersey. I wouldn't say my daughter living there was the sole consideration for moving. Our house in South Carolina is in a suburb called Moncks Corner, about 30 miles from Charleston proper.

After a tepid year in the IPO market, investors are hopeful 2024 will bring about a return to form. But the IPO market cratered in 2022 after the Federal Reserve's aggressive rate hiking campaign collapsed investor demand for growth stocks. But happier days could be ahead for the IPO market in 2024. According to Linqto's 2024 IPO Sentiment Survey released Thursday, only a little more than half, 52%, of 2,500 traders polled are anticipating a significant recovery in the IPO market this year, suggesting "cautious optimism" ahead. "There's a lot more optimism for the IPO market," said Akshata Bailkeri, head of research at EquityZen, a platform for pre-IPO activity.

On Tuesday afternoon at a courthouse in Kansas City, Missouri, the collective nightmare of the real-estate industry became reality. For decades, the basic structure of how real-estate agents get paid when they help someone buy or sell their home has remained roughly the same. Here's how it works: When you list your home for sale on an MLS, you're required to offer a commission to the buyer's agent. The good buyer's agents who can prove their value will be fine, Brobeck predicted. Buyers might also start making offers on the condition that the seller agrees to pay both agents' commissions — otherwise, no deal.

An increasing number of buyers are purchasing homes in the fall and winter, Opendoor found. If the housing market normalizes, home buying could shift back to spring and summer, an expert said. A recent study from Opendoor found that the fall and winter months have become popular with home sellers. Despite a slump in the housing market, it's positive news for both sellers and buyers — demand still exists. "The housing market has gone through a period of distortion caused by mortgage rates being kept too low for too long," he told Insider.

Maryviolet | Istock | Getty ImagesResearch suggests it's best to hold off on claiming Social Security retirement benefits until age 70, if possible, to get the biggest monthly payments available to you. That includes 17% of respondents ages 60 to 65, who may be on the brink of retirement, according to the results. Why it pays to wait to claim Social Security benefitsEarly claiming will affect the size of your monthly Social Security checks. For each year delayed past full retirement age to age 70, 8% is added to Social Security benefits. By waiting up to age 70, retirees can lock in the biggest benefit checks available based on their work records.

It's a seller's real-estate market, meaning the demand for homes exceeds supply. Homesellers can fetch more at closing if their property has a few key upgrades that buyers want. A refreshed kitchen and primary bathroom can help boost the sale price, agents said. It's a seller's real-estate market. The latter is a truth that's existed for a while, despite the predictions of a real-estate market crash or impending comedown of home prices.

The biggest week of this earnings season showed us that things aren't as bad as many feared. The week ahead of earnings, including several more Club names, should tell us more. The results are always important, but it's the guidance and management commentary we will really hone in on to better understand the path ahead. In Amazon's case, a solid first quarter for its AWS cloud business was overshadowed by management seeing a material slowdown in April. ET: Nonfarm Payrolls Looking back It was the biggest week of this earnings season for the Club as several of our mega-cap holdings and industry bellwethers reported results.
Chamath Palihapitiya was dubbed the "next Warren Buffett" after a series of successful bets in 2019 and 2020. Palihapitiya even compared his returns to Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway in his annual letters. The dealmaking prowess of Palihapitiya sparked comparisons that his Social Capital investment vehicle was essentially a baby Berkshire Hathaway. Even Palihapitiya himself, who has called Buffett an inspiration, compared his investment returns to the early returns of Berkshire Hathaway in his annual shareholder letters. Palihapitiya addressed the destruction in value seen across technology companies in Social Capital's 2022 investment letter.
When Is The Best Time to Buy a House?

Keith Rabois' startup, OpenStore, is launching a new service for Shopify merchants. Keith Rabois founded OpenStore in 2021 with the idea of scooping up Shopify stores and using economies of scale to supercharge their sales. OpenStore has acquired more than 40 Shopify stores so far, says Rabois, a venture capitalist who placed early bets on DoorDash, Affirm, Stripe, and Faire. That makes OpenStore the largest owner and operator of Shopify brands in the world, he told Insider in a recent interview. However, there's "a lot of room" to grow Shopify brands, he added.
